International Day of Women & Girls in Science | BioRural Edition

Ever wondered why the gender gap persists in STEM fields worldwide, despite women’s strides in education?

The International Day of Women & Girls in Science sheds light on this issue, symbolizing a push towards a more inclusive future. Significant milestones include the 2011 report by the Commission on the Status of Women advocating for women’s access to education and tech, and the 2013 General Assembly resolution emphasizing gender equality in science. Here at BioRural, we’re proud supporters of gender equality in science, boasting numerous brilliant female scientists within our ranks who inspire us daily with their expertise and passion. Let’s celebrate their contributions and continue striving for a more equitable world!

Rasa Pakeltienė, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Bioeconomy Development of our partner Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy, shares with us her thoughts on gender equality in science: “The rising tide of recognition and support for women in science signifies a collective acknowledgment of their invaluable contributions, heralding a seismic shift towards inclusivity and diversity in the scientific community. As barriers dissolve, this newfound encouragement fosters an environment where the brilliance of all minds, irrespective of gender, can thrive and reshape the future of scientific innovation”.

Eleni Intzidi, Project Develoer & Manager at InCommon, mentions: “Undoubtedly women have made remarkable contributions in all sectors, from education and research to technology and medicine. Personally, I am privileged to be working in a female-dominated environment, with women from across the scientific fields. However, there is still a long long way to go, and although there is indeed progress, it is also indicative that most of our scientific partners are in male-dominated workplaces. Leading by example is key; the more women are represented and recognised in the scientific world, the more girls would imagine themselves being part of this world and the more they will pursue careers in science.

Maja Berden Zrimec, Head of research at our partner organisation Algen, highlights the importance of celebrations like this for women: “I’m extremely happy to see a growing recognition of women for their contributions to science and their acknowledgment as equals. I want to empower everyone with this message: With dedication and enough effort, you can excel in anything, no matter what others tell you.”

Despoina Kampouridou, Project Manager at Foodscale Hub, draws attention to women’s contribution in the scientific community, underlining the importance of agknowledging and celebrating them to raise awareness: “It is important to celebrate the strides made in achieving gender equality in the scientific community, recognizing the vital role women play in driving innovation and progress forward.”

Magdalena Borzęcka, Associate Professor at IUNG, shares her own experience: “As a woman who has been working in science for 20 years, I see growing recognition for myself and the activities of my female colleagues. Gender equality is becoming more and more visible, although it certainly requires work in many areas. Strong women have been and will be an inspiration for their younger colleagues, especially working together and supporting their scientific endeavours at the beginning of their careers can have a positive impact on professional development and career paths of women.

Natasa Ristovska, Executive Director at Green Growth Platform, mentions: “Women play a critical role in science and make significant contributions in various fields. Their achievements should be acknowledged and their participation should be further strengthened following the positive trajectory towards more inclusive and equitable science and technology disciplines. We should remember all notable female scientists who have changed the world, stay committed to creating more opportunities for women across all of our disciplines, promote the full and equal participation of women in education, employment and decision-making and inspire many others in different scientific fields.”

Wassilina Bugaeva, Researcher and scientist at Izes gGmbH, inspires all yound women to fullfil their potential with her encouraging words: “I would like to encourage young females to study a scientific subject, because it is essential to understand nature in order to find innovative solutions. A scientific degree offers a wide range of opportunities to add value to the environment, the climate and our society. It is also a great opportunity for personal growth and development.”

A huge thank you to all women scientists of the BioRural team for taking the time to participate in this initiative and for sharing their experiences and their encouraging words – You are a source of inspiration!

Let’s continue empowering one another towards bridging the gender gap in scientific fields and beyond!
